Wong Kar Wai’s Company Registers Multiple Trademarks for Blossoms: Secures “Bu Xiang” and “Miss Wang,” Misses “San Yang” and “Bao Zong”

The blockbuster drama Blossoms (《繁花》) concluded its run on January 9, 2024. According to data from Lighthouse Pro, as of January 9, Blossoms achieved 14 consecutive days as the most-played drama across all platforms and held the top spot for daily popularity on Tencent Video for 14 days.
With the drama’s popularity soaring, trademark agencies have noted that familiar terms from the series, such as “Miss Wang” (汪小姐), “Shanghai Blossoms” (上海繁花), “San Yang” (三羊), “Blossoms” (繁花), and “Bu Xiang” (不响), have already been applied for as trademarks. Trademark applications related to Blossoms exceed 200, covering logos, text, graphics, and English translations.
A review by The Paper on the China Trademark Network under the National Intellectual Property Administration confirms that these trademarks have indeed been applied for. Most of the applications were submitted by Jet Tone Production Limited, the production company behind Blossoms, co-founded by renowned directors Wong Kar Wai and Jeffrey Lau. The company is also known for films like East Meets West (《东成西就》) and In the Mood for Love (《花样年华》).
Among Jet Tone Production Limited’s trademark applications, some were rejected. For example, “San Yang” was applied for in August 2020 but was denied registration and is now invalid. However, trademarks like “Miss Wang,” “Bu Xiang,” and “Blossoms” have been successfully registered. The term “Ye Shu” (爷叔) was registered as a trademark earlier in 2012 and 2017 by Shanghai Zuxiang Food Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Leijia Trading Co., Ltd., respectively. As for “Bao Zong” (宝总), it has been registered as a trademark since 2018 by an individual applicant, covering categories such as medical devices, instruments, and tea beverages.
